founder of Jimmy Beans Wool

Check-in begins at 12:30 PM
New York Society for Ethical Culture (Social Hall)
2 West 64th Street at Central Park West
The yarn retailer Jimmy Beans Wool was started by Laura Zander and her husband in 2002 and now employs more than 70 people. And it continues to grow, having recently acquired Namaste and della Q (project bag companies) and Madelinetosh (yarn producer) and launched SmartStix (knitting needle line). Jimmy Beans Wool has been involved in national campaigns such as The Heart Truth, which raises awareness of heart disease in women, and has partnered with makers such as Gaye Glasspie (also known as GGMADEIT) and dyer and designer Dawn Barker (of Barker Wool). Laura believes that knitters are the heart of the yarn industry, and that yarn has the power to strengthen the fiber community and bring new knitters into the fold.
Presentation: Why Knitters Matter More Than You Think
Laura Zander will share with us her journey, from owning a tiny yarn shop to leading multiple beloved fiber brands. In this talk, she will discuss how our enthusiasm, curiosity, and support help artisans, shops, and makers to thrive. With examples from locations as diverse as Reno, Nevada, and rural Vietnam, Laura will explain the values and talk about collaborations that have guided her work. We, as knitters, will walk away from this event feeling proud of the powerful role we play in the yarn community.
