Cecelia Campochiaro’s groundbreaking book Sequence Knitting (2015) introduced knitters to the possibilities for creating richly textured fabrics through the simple repetition of stitch combinations. She explored other new frontiers in knitting in Making Marls (2020), which reimagines colorwork through the process of knitting several strands of yarn as one, and Reversible Knitting (2025), a comprehensive stitch dictionary of patterns that look identical on both sides.
Before dedicating herself fully to the fiber arts, Cecelia spent many years in Silicon Valley developing specialized microscopes for computer chip manufacturing. Today, she combines technical curiosity with creative exploration, designing innovative knitting techniques and writing books that are as beautiful as they are informative.
Presentation: A Systematic Approach to Color and Texture in Handknitting
In this illustrated talk, Cecelia will discuss her creative journey and explain how she approaches textile design. It is a meander from sequence knitting through marling and, most recently, reversible knitting. The overarching theme is: taking a fresh look at old patterns and approaches, systematically, can result in wonderful discoveries.

Introduction to Marling Workshop

Cecelia will also be joining us on Sunday, September 20, and providing a general introduction to working with marls as a way to create color effects in handknitting. Many colors of ITO Kinu (silk) and ITO Sensai (silk mohair) yarn will be provided in class so you can play and experiment. You’ll learn how to use microswatches to pre-visualize how marls look and work out arrangements of marl sequences. You’ll get the Ella Improv pattern as part of the class, which is an ideal small project to experiment with marls. If you love color, but sometimes worry about choosing color, this class will give you some practical approaches that build confidence.
Level: Advanced beginners and beyond. Students must be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase and decrease without help and should be able to read their knitting.
Materials: Needles in US 2.5 (3 mm), US 3 (3.25 mm), and US 4 (3.5 mm) sizes. They can be circulars, straights, or DPNs, but they should have sharp tips like lace needles. In short, students need to bring needles and their basic kit, but Cecelia will provide yarn.
